Sometimes, garage door opener issues can be remedied with a simple reset. In this blog entry, the commercial garage door opener repair experts here at Garage Door Repair Chicago will detail the simplest ways to reset your garage door opener to (hopefully) instantly remedy any issue that you might be experiencing with your garage door opener.
Erase Old Garage Door Opener Codes
Erase the codes already programmed into your garage door opener. Look for the ‘learn’ button on your garage door opener (if it isn’t clearly labeled, consult the manual, which can usually be found online.) Usually these buttons are on the rear of the motor housing on the opposite side of the garage door, and on some garage door opener models, an LED will be next to it. Hold the ‘learn’ button for at least 6 seconds to erase it’s codes. When codes are erased, the door should automatically open and close.
Garage Door Remote Reprogramming
Reprogram your garage door remote with new garage door opener codes – at least once for each garage door remote. Every garage door remote has different reprogramming guidelines, so it’s best to consult their manuals. Commonly, you’ll have to hold the remote control programing button until a light comes on, and then choose a garage door control button, and press it a few times. Then, press any button to exit the step, and press and release the garage door opener ‘learn’ button – the LED will glow for a certain amount of time indicating how long you will have to reprogram the opener. Press the remote button as long as the LED light on the opener is on – then you should see garage door lights flash, ro hear two clicks. Test this garage door remote button to see if it works.
In-Car System Programming
Just as with garage doors, steps with in-car system reprogramming might vary – consult manuals for specifics (but the process usually looks somewhat like this:) Press the two outside buttons on your remote, and let go when indicator lights begin to flash. Then hold the end of the transmitter that you want to program 1-2 inches away from the surface of the in-car device, and press the transmitter button and the in-car device button at the same time, letting go when the light changes it’s blink pattern. Then press the ‘learn’ button on the garage door open for 1 second, and release quickly. Then press the in-vehicle program link button for 2 seconds, and release. Repeat the step, and check to see if the garage door opener will activate the in-vehicle device.
