My Garage Door Won’t Close! What Should I Do?

It can be very annoying and inconvenient to have a malfunctioning garage door that won’t close, either being stuck fully open or regularly reversing direction during the closing process. In this blog entry, our garage door opener repair and Chicago garage door repair team will detail some easy tips for resolving the issue of garage doors that don’t close.

Check Garage Photo Eye Sensors

Check if the garage door photo eye sensors are blocked or misaligned. The sensors are on both sides of the garage door, 4-6 inches above the floor. The sensors share an infrared signal that, when broken or blocked, prevents the garage door from closing. Move debris or obstructions from around the sensors, and make sure the sensors are facing each other and have illuminated lights. If they need to be adjusted, the wingnut securing them to the bracket can be turned.

Garage Door Track and Roller Inspection

Check if the garage door has damaged tracks or rollers. Inspect tracks for dents or obstructions. If there’s any dents, use a rubber hammer or mallet and a solid block of wood to straighten them out. Make sure the rollers roll smoothly along the tracks, and replace them if they do not.

Garage Door Opener Inspection

If the tracks and rollers and photo eye are in solid condition, check the garage door opener to make sure that it’s plugged into a working power source. Try resetting the opener by disconnecting the power for a minute and then reconnecting it, which can sometimes remedy sensor or software issues.
