How to know if your Garage Door Sensors are Misalligned

Garage sensors have to be perfectly aligned in order for the garage to work. In this blog entry, the garage door repair experts here at Chicago Garage Door will explain how to understand if your garage door sensors are misaligned.

Signs your Garage Door Sensors are Misaligned

If you think your garage door problem is caused byu sensor misalignment, check if an item is obstructing the light beam between the two sensors. Remove any obstructions if you find them.

If there’s no obstruction, locate the photo eyes of the sensor. There will be two on the right and left side of the door, about half-a-foot off the ground. Then look at the LED light on each sensor. The LED light should be steady and green. A flashing light or red light means there’s probably a misalignment.

If the LED light is steady and green but the door still doesn’t work, check the lens of the photo eye for any dirt, dust, or grime. If you find any, clean it with a soft cloth.

Then, measure the exact positioned height of each sensor using a level to make sure they are properly aligned. Both sensors have to be at the same height and facing one another. If they are not, we recommend contacting a licensed garage door expert like those here at Chicago Garage Door for instant repairs.

Repairing Misaligned Garage Door Sensors

Misaligned garage door sensors can be repaired – simply readjust them! Firstly, loosen the screws on the brackets of the pivots – then you can move the sensor up and down, and aim the sensor perfectly to hit the other sensor. When both sensors are aligned, the LED light will come on steady and green. Then, test the sensor to make sure they are working. Place a soft object under the garage door and activate it to shut – the sensors should detect the object and not let the doors close, or reverse. If they don’t and shut on the object, contact the experts at Chicago Garage Door ASAP to organize repair service.
